No. Just…No.

This is one of the gems making the rounds on Facebook right now… (and by “gems,” I really mean ignorant, entitled bullshit…)

I find it amusing that hundreds of thousands of federal employees just got an unrequested “vacation” without pay because Congress couldn’t get their shit together, and STILL, everyone, including other middle class Americans, are still focusing on blaming the poor people in America.

(I’ve written about this before, and anyone interested in actual facts can check out that link…)

Or, if facts don’t really matter much, I’ll leave you with this little ode to misrepresentation and straight up lies. (I’ll reprint the caption that’s tagging along with this particular incarnation of an old pic, but please, don’t hold me responsible for the dumbassery…)

"What the hell is this... A picture is worth a thousand words. SOMEONE WAS AT THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME WITH A CAMERA. IT WAS REPORTED THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS FURIOUS THAT HE WAS CAUGHT ON CAMERA AND IT WAS PUBLISHED AND TRIED TO BLOCK IT. The name of the book Obama is holding is called: The Post-American World, and it was written by a fellow Muslim.(Fareed Zakaria) "Post" America means: The World "After" America !" If each person sends this to a minimum of twenty people on their address list, In three days, all people in The United States of America would have the message. I believe this is one photo that really should be passed around."

      • I was being ‘funny’. Seriously though, the book is harmless, if not informative. Whoever wrote the review is full of shit. There are no rainbows on America’s horizon, our education system is deteriorating and losing ground to countries like China, India, Japan… The US manufacturing sector is crumbling, and will continue as long as we keep out-sourcing. I’m glad he read it, just don’t understand why he would make it secretive. He could be burning books.

  1. And people would use those things to argue with you about “how Obama is ruining our country because he hates American and is a muslim”
The minute they say “I saw it on facebook or the internet” I stop talking and laugh.

    • The “internet” is huge, and while there are some semi-viable sources….well, this is not one of them. I mean… “It has been reported” that Obama was mad and tried to hide this… Really? WHO reported it? And them defining “post” for us. like they’re handing us some revelatory info we didn’t have? Thanks, Hillbilly Hilda, I know what “post” means… lol

    • I KNOW!!! I just love how snotty and entitled some people are about welfare. FOr the percentage of ppl that abuse it (and it is small!) there are people it helps…and if people are that impoverished of heart and mind they don’t want to feed hungry children, they have bigger problems than welfare.

  2. I agree with you to the extent that people have erroneous ideas, but at the same time, I think it helps to try to put yourself in the other person’s frame of mind and at least try to understand their argument. I think you’ll find that most grievances have some grain of truth to them. That doesn’t mean that there’s not just as much “truth” on the other side. Issues are a lot more complex than we make them.

Take the example of the white dude bitching about social programs. You correctly point out that tons of money is wasted in other areas of government. It’s true–social spending isn’t really a big part of our money problem–the big three are medicare, social security and military. Having said that, the dude in the caption presumably works and pays taxes. Is it so unreasonable that he would feel resentful of people who (apparently, anyway) receive the same benefits as he does, but without having to be away from his family 8-10 hours every day. Perhaps his anger is misplaced, but is he any more deserving of scorn than any other person who blames his problems on an external source?

And quickly, “Muslim.” I think it’s silly to call the president a Muslim. However, what I think even more silly is the sneering way such proclamations are greeted, “That person is so dumb he doesn’t know Obama is a Christian,” and then ignore everything else the person says. In this instance, the so-called “smart person” can only identify one reason a person would believe the president was Muslim–ignorance. And certainly a large percentage of people who allege that are. However, it fails to take into account all the people (and I know a few) who know that Obama professions Christianity, but believe him to be a secret Muslim. Why is this important? Because in this, and in so many other political arguments, if we don’t understand where the other person is coming from, what they’re REALLY saying, then we’re never going to convince them the folly of their ways. Too often discourse these days is about winning, not about convincing. That’s pointless and ugly.

    • “Too often discourse these days is about winning, not about convincing.” In many ways “winning” IS convincing someone to your point of you. MY point, especially with the whole Muslim thing is that, even confronted with the truth, people that are determined NOT to like someone, or to be against something, are going to believe what they want anyway.
As to your question about whether or not I can blame the tax paying white guy for being bitter… if he is bitter to the point where he pigeonholes ALL people receiving benefits as lazy, and begrudges people who ARE working 8-10 hours a day and also paying taxes (just not getting paid as much as him, because we can’t all be CEOS) that still get benefits, I ABSOLUTELY can blame him for his attitude, because he is obviously coming from a point of not trying to understand someone else’s frame of mind. Being poor is no fun. Maybe some people like to game the system or sit on their duffs and collect money, but most poor people are just trying to get by and put food on their tables, and I can’t lie. Generally speaking, food stamps, for instance are afforded to families whose gross income is 130% of federal poverty level. If the white dude can begrudge someone making that little, but still working food assistance, than he deserves my scorn, I feel. :/ Thank you for your thoughtful comments and taking the time to share them.
